Evening of Music and Dance Takes You Back to Newport’s Golden Era with The Silver Slipper, Tropicoso, and Michael McIntire and the Marmalade Brigade Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. at Historic Southgate House: Tickets only $8.
On Saturday July 19th, 2008, the Historic Southgate House will be transformed into a dance hall reminiscent of the infamous entertainment district that was Newport, Kentucky. The Silver Slipper will perform a retrospective of the Jazz Era that started in the 1920’s. Tropicoso and Michael McIntire and the Marmalade Brigade also join the group to round out a full night of lively musical fare. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and music starts at 8:30 pm in the ballroom (non-smoking). Admission is only $8 (21 and up) and $10 (18-20). A pair of tickets may also be purchased online for $12 at www.southgatehouse.com.
Named for one of Newport’s most infamous casinos, The Silver Slipper pays tribute to a time when an evening out was about grandeur and sophistication. One the Tri-State’s newest musical powerhouses, The Silver Slipper is anchored by Vicki D’Salle, an accomplished boogie style pianist and singer. Vicki plays both locally and internationally. Emily Reece has spent the last several years perfecting her sound in some of the area’s most beloved venues, blending her classical and jazz training with the traditions of country music. She’s performed with a number of area musicians and recently opened for folk darlings, The Po’ Girls. Kristen Kreft currently plays keyboards and vocals with the CEA nominated J. Dorsey Blues Band. After spending ten years performing in NYC, she has moved home to Cincinnati where she produced and performed in the cabaret duo Toulouse Fleausaise, as well as singing back-up for local favorite Pearlene. Lance Kaufman and Jim Ohlschmidt of local rockabilly favorites, The StarDevils, join in on drums and guitar. The StarDevils have made their mark as a well-known national touring act and a featured artist at U.S. rockabilly festivals and the popular British Hemsby Rockabilly Weekender. They have also performed with rockabilly legend and King recording artist, Rusty York. Well regarded John Schimdt of Ricky Nye and the Red Hots and formerly of the Warsaw Falcons will add his musical prowess on stand up bass.
Michael McIntire and the Marmalade Brigade will set the mood with their eclectic mix of Jazz and Folk with an old world twist. A gypsy at heart, McIntire combines an array of musical styles to create a sound that is thoroughly modern while heralding back to the canteens of old Europe. Tropicoso will spice up the night with the steamy rhythms of original numbers and popular salsa standards. As Cincinnati’s premiere Latin ensemble, their high-energy performance inspires audiences to get on their feet and dance.
Join The Silver Slipper with Tropicoso, and Michael McIntire and the Marmalade Brigade on July 19, 2008 at the Historic Southgate House. Three bands mesh musical eras and styles to form an enlightened evening of entertainment and dancing.
